Pilots and safety
Pankha means wing.
Eight local pilots who grew up under these thermals. Between them, more than forty thousand tandem flights off Sarangkot.
How we keep it safe
Boring rules. Beautiful flights.
- Licensed pilotsEvery pilot holds a tandem licence from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal and does yearly refresher training.
- Gear on a scheduleWings, harnesses and reserves are inspected every month and retired by flight hours, not by eye.
- The hill decidesA head pilot checks wind and cloud at the launch before every wave. No wave flies if it isn't right.
- Insurance includedEvery flyer is covered for the flight and the drive.
Questions
Before you fly…
Is it scary?
The run-off lasts three seconds and then it's smooth and quiet. Most people say the drive up is more nerve-racking than the flight.
What if I feel sick?
Tell your pilot. They will fly gently and land early if you want. Skip the acro flight if you get motion sick, and don't fly on an empty stomach.
Which month is best?
October to April has the clearest mountain views. The monsoon (June to August) brings more weather holds, and some days the hill is closed.
Can children fly?
Yes, from 6 years old on the classic flight, with a parent's consent. We have smaller harnesses.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your booking goes to "Weather hold" and we move you to the next good wave for free, or refund you in full.
